Deryl started playing hockey at secondary school and the school soon had a superb team, becoming the one to beat in Kent. Deryl was persuaded to join the Optimist hockey club and never looked back. Working and training hard he eventually made the 1st XI in his late teens.
Deryl has continued to play most weeks over the winter months for the last 35 or so years and has thoroughly enjoyed it. There have, like in any sport, been ups and downs. Promotion, relegation and some fantastic cup runs along with the inevitable injury along the way. Deryl now plays in the lower XIs passing on his knowledge to the up and coming young stars of the club.
Deryl’s most recent success is being selected for the Wales Masters 050s and playing in the home Nations at the Commonwealth Park Hockey centre in Glasgow.
Deryl passed his KHUA qualification some years ago and has enjoyed umpiring ever since. He has umpired many club games at all levels, but has also been lucky enough to umpire higher calibre matches like the Kent Final, Kent schools finals boys and girls, South East regional matches and even England girls U21s.
Deryl thoroughly enjoys coaching. Having qualified, mainly to help improve his son’s hockey, he has now passed on his knowledge and enthusiasm mainly to children in the Shepway area schools. He has in the past enjoyed much success as both a Kent and South East regional coach at various tournaments in Nottingham, Manchester and Birmingham.
