How to take your first steps into fitness
It can be extremely daunting when you take your first steps into fitness. Catherine Spencer, SST ambassador and former England Womens Rugby Union Captain, talks about how she will be getting back to it and what her first steps will look like:
“Many of us, every year, start thinking about New Year’s resolutions during the build up to Christmas. What will next year bring? What challenges do we want to take on? For lots of us, some form of exercise-related resolution will be on the list. Go for a walk, do more exercise, go to the gym, climb a mountain, swim the channel!
Whatever our aims, we all have to start in the same place. We just have to take that first step. For me this year, my first steps will not be brand new, but all about getting back in to regular exercise. Now pregnant and with an arthritic knee that was diagnosed earlier this year, my exercise regime has slackened off to near zero!
For me, it will all be about little steps. Going for a walk one day, aiming for a class once per week and maybe hitting the swimming pool too. This is a world away from my old rugby playing days when I was in the gym or on the track or pitch every day. Now, it is about re-setting goals and creating new targets that are relevant to our current lives.
Whether we have an elite sporting background or we have no sporting history we can take these first steps together. I will be going for a brisk walk on Christmas day morning rather than the traditional Christmas Day run that me and my brothers have done together each year for as long as I can remember! They will still head out for a run but I will be tailoring my exercise this year; that will be my first step. My new Christmas morning brisk walk. What will yours be?
Remember we don’t have to wait until tomorrow, or Monday or next year. We can take our first steps today.”
